Getting around

Bergamo — Getting around

Bergamo is easy to reach and easy to live in car-free, and it has one of the most useful airports in Italy right on its doorstep. The lower city is flat and walkable, a funicular climbs to the medieval upper town, and Milan is under an hour by train. One caveat: Bergamo is on a regional line, not the high-speed network, so the fastest trains to distant cities usually go via Milan.

Getting there

By air — Orio al Serio (Milan Bergamo)

Bergamo’s own airport, Orio al Serio (BGY), is one of the biggest low-cost hubs in Italy: a huge range of budget European flights, marketed as “Milan Bergamo,” just five kilometres from the centre. For most Europeans this is a direct, cheap way in; long-haul routes through a larger hub.

From the airport into town — ATB Line 1

The ATB Line 1 bus runs from the airport to Bergamo’s centre and train station in around 15 minutes, every 20 minutes, for about €2.60.

By train

Bergamo's station sits on the regional line to Milan, about 50 minutes away, with connections on toward Brescia and Lecco. Milan is the gateway to the high-speed network for longer trips (times below).

Around the city

On foot

The lower city, Città Bassa, is flat and walkable, and the upper town, Città Alta, is a compact maze of medieval streets best explored on foot. Most central daily life happens walking, though the climb between the two is steep.

The funicular

A historic funicular railway links the lower city to the walled upper town in a couple of minutes, saving the steep climb. It’s genuine daily transport for residents, not just a tourist ride, and a second funicular climbs on to San Vigilio above. Both are run by ATB and covered by a normal ticket.

Buses and tram (ATB)

ATB runs the city buses plus a modern tram line out to the valleys. A single ride is €1.70, valid 75 minutes, and it covers the buses, tram, and the funiculars (ATB, 2026).

Intercity buses (FlixBus and Itabus)

A budget option for other cities, and Bergamo’s airport makes it a common coach stop. For most trips the train via Milan is faster, but the coach can win on price or for direct routes the train serves awkwardly. Check routes and fares on FlixBus ›

A note on driving

Città Alta has tight, restricted medieval streets and a ZTL, so a car is a real burden up top. Down in Città Bassa it's more usable, but for the city itself the funicular and buses are easier. A car mainly earns its keep for the lakes and mountains nearby.
