Getting around

Livorno is a flat, walkable port city with easy links out. Pisa’s airport is barely twenty minutes away by train, ferries leave for the islands and beyond, and the centre gets around on foot and by bus. It’s the practical, un-touristy way into coastal Tuscany.
Getting there
By air — Pisa (Galileo Galilei)
Livorno’s airport is Pisa’s Galileo Galilei (PSA), a busy international airport only about 20 minutes away by train, European routes and some long-haul via hubs. Florence’s airport is another option a bit farther.
By sea — the ferry port
Livorno is a major ferry port, with car and passenger ferries to Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily, and Spain, a genuine way in and out, and a big part of the city’s life.
By train
Livorno's station sits on the Tyrrhenian coastal line. Pisa is 15–20 minutes north, Florence about an hour and twenty, and Rome down the coast (times below).
Around the city
On foot
The centre is flat and walkable, laced with the canals of the old Venezia Nuova quarter. Most central daily life happens on foot.
Buses (Autolinee Toscane)
Livorno’s local network is run by Autolinee Toscane, Tuscany’s region-wide operator. A single ride is €2.00, valid 90 minutes (Autolinee Toscane, 2026).
The Montenero funicular
A historic funicular railway climbs from the southern suburbs up to the hilltop sanctuary of Montenero, run by Autolinee Toscane and covered by the transit system, part everyday transport, part lovely ride.
Intercity buses (FlixBus and Itabus)
A budget option for other cities. On the coastal corridor the train is usually faster, but the coach can win on price or for routes the train serves awkwardly. Check routes and fares on FlixBus ›
A note on driving
Livorno's centre has a ZTL (limited-traffic zone) and the usual port-city traffic, so a car is a burden in the core. It earns its keep mainly for the coast road south, the Etruscan Coast and its beaches and wine, and the Tuscan countryside.
