Getting around

Lucca is one of the most pleasant Tuscan cities to live in without a car. The walled centre is small, flat, and best crossed on foot or by bike, including the famous loop around the top of the walls, and regular trains reach Pisa, its airport, and Florence. Life here really does move at cycling pace.
Getting there
By air — Pisa (Galileo Galilei)
The nearest airport is Pisa’s Galileo Galilei (PSA), Tuscany’s main international gateway, reached by train via Pisa Centrale in about 40 minutes all in, wide European coverage and some long-haul. Florence’s airport is another option a bit farther.
By train
Lucca's station is a five-minute walk from the walls, on the regional lines linking Florence with the coast. Pisa is about 20 minutes away, the seaside at Viareggio about 20 minutes, and Florence about an hour and twenty (times below).
Around the city
On foot and by bike — the walls
Lucca's signature is its intact Renaissance walls, now a wide, tree-topped promenade that circles the whole city: locals walk and cycle the loop daily, and inside the walls everything is a flat, easy stroll. This is a city made for two wheels and two feet.
Buses (Autolinee Toscane)
The local network is run by Autolinee Toscane, Tuscany’s region-wide operator. A single ride is €2.00, valid 90 minutes (Autolinee Toscane, 2026).
Intercity buses (FlixBus and Itabus)
A budget option for other cities. On the regional lines the train is usually faster and more central, so most people take it, but the coach can win on price or for routes the train serves awkwardly. Check routes and fares on FlixBus ›
A note on driving
Lucca's walled centre is largely car-free with a strict ZTL, and parking is outside the walls, so a car is a liability in the core. It earns its keep mainly for the hills, the villas of the Lucchesia, and the Garfagnana countryside to the north.
