Cost & housing

Messina is one of the cheapest real cities to live in anywhere in Italy, a genuine port city on the strait, at prices that read like a misprint. The affordability is born of the city’s hard century rather than any lack of life or setting. What follows is the range; for the money, and the position between Sicily and the mainland, there’s little like it.
Renting
These reflect a decent, functional apartment with a real kitchen and a lift. Cheaper exists if you compromise on condition or location; much of the city is 20th-century rebuild, so quality is more about the building than the neighbourhood.

Buying
Among the lowest city prices in Italy. You can buy a real apartment, with a sea view up toward the strait, for a fraction of mainland prices. The low figures reflect the city’s economic struggles, not its position; for a buyer with vision, the value is striking.

Other monthly costs
Utilities are a national market in Italy, so that range holds roughly anywhere. Messina’s Sicilian climate is hot in summer and mild in winter, so cooling matters more than heating across the year.

Our take
Messina rewards the person who looks past the surface. Yes, it’s a rebuilt working city with a strained economy and a hard history, but it’s also a place where a genuine home, on the water, between an island and a continent, costs less than almost anywhere in Italy. If you’re renting, you can live on the strait for very little. If you’re buying, you’re getting into a real city at prices that feel like a mistake, in a place whose fortunes could turn if the long-promised bridge ever comes. It asks for open eyes and gives back a plain, affordable Sicilian life.
The one thing nobody else tells you: Messina’s secret is that you’re not really choosing between Sicily and the mainland. You’re choosing both. The ferries run all day, so Reggio Calabria and the toe of Italy are a fifteen-minute hop, while the whole of Sicily, Taormina, Etna, the coast, spreads out behind you by train. Most people treat Messina as a place to pass through on the way to somewhere prettier; the ones who live here enjoy having two worlds within easy reach and paying almost nothing to sit between them.
