Getting around

Modena — Getting around

Modena is small, flat, and easy to live in without a car. The historic centre walks end to end in fifteen minutes, buses cover the rest, and the city sits right on the Milan–Bologna line, so Bologna is twenty minutes away and its airport is an easy hop. This is also Motor Valley: Ferrari, Maserati, and Lamborghini are all built within a short drive.

Getting there

By air

Modena has no airport of its own. The nearest is Bologna Marconi (BLQ), a full international airport about 50 minutes away by direct bus or via train. Milan’s airports are also within reach to the northwest. For long-haul you’ll route through Bologna, Milan, or a European hub.

From the airport into town — the Aerbus

A direct Aerbus coach links Bologna Marconi Airport to Modena’s centre in about 50 minutes; or the Marconi Express monorail reaches Bologna station in 7 minutes, with frequent trains on to Modena.

By train

Modena's station sits on the main Milan–Bologna line, so Bologna is about 20 minutes away and Milan about an hour, with the neighbouring Emilian cities minutes apart (times below).

Around the city

On foot and by bike

The historic centre is small, flat, and easily walkable, and, like the rest of Emilia, cycling is part of daily life, with bike lanes and short distances. Most central errands happen on foot or two wheels.

Buses (SETA)

Modena’s local network is run by SETA; there’s no metro or tram, but the compact city doesn’t need one. A single ride is €2.00 (SETA, 2026).

Intercity buses (FlixBus and Itabus)

A budget option for other cities. On Modena’s rail corridor the train is usually faster and more central, so most people take it, but the coach can win on price or for routes the train serves awkwardly. Check routes and fares on FlixBus ›

A note on driving

Modena's historic centre has a ZTL (limited-traffic zone) and the usual parking squeeze, so a car is a burden in the core. Where it earns its keep is Motor Valley: the Ferrari museums at Maranello and Modena, Maserati and Lamborghini, and the Emilian countryside are all easiest to reach by car.
