Learn more about the historic heart

Parma’s historic heart grew up around two great squares. Piazza Garibaldi, built over the old Roman forum, has been the civic centre for two thousand years — the town hall and the governor’s palace still face each other across it. A few streets north lies Piazza del Duomo, one of the finest medieval squares in Italy, and the reason many people come to Parma at all.

The Cathedral is Italian Romanesque, consecrated in 1106, and its dome holds Correggio’s Assumption of the Virgin — painted between 1526 and 1530, a dizzying swirl of figures that changed how European artists thought about painting a ceiling. Beside it stands the Baptistery, begun in 1196 by Benedetto Antelami: an octagonal tower clad in pink marble, caught exactly at the hinge between Romanesque and Gothic. Add the Teatro Regio, the opera house Parma judges the world by, and you have a centre that rewards slow walking.

Across the river

Across the river (the name means 'over the stream'), a vibrant, characterful quarter near the university and the green Parco Ducale. Trattorias, artisan shops, and a student energy, more affordable than the center and full of authentic local flavor.
