Getting around

Pisa — Getting around

Pisa has something rare in Tuscany: its own major international airport, right in the city and linked to the station in minutes. The flat, compact centre walks easily, the airport makes flying anywhere simple, and fast trains reach Florence in an hour. Few Tuscan cities are this easy to get into and out of.

Getting there

By air — Galileo Galilei (PSA)

Pisa’s Galileo Galilei is Tuscany’s main international airport: wide European coverage and some long-haul, and it’s right in the city, not an hour away. This is a genuine reason to choose Pisa: you can fly to much of Europe direct.

From the airport into town — the PisaMover

An automated shuttle, the PisaMover, links the airport to Pisa Centrale station in about 5 minutes, running every few minutes, for around €2.70.

By train

Pisa Centrale is a junction on the Tyrrhenian coastal line and the line inland to Florence, so Livorno, Lucca, and Florence are all close, and the coast opens up in both directions (times below).

Around the city

On foot and by bike

The centre is flat, compact, and split by the Arno, easily walkable, and cycling is common among the big student population. Most central daily life happens on foot or two wheels.

Buses (Autolinee Toscane)

Pisa’s local network is run by Autolinee Toscane, Tuscany’s region-wide operator. A single ride is €2.00, valid 90 minutes (Autolinee Toscane, 2026).

Intercity buses (FlixBus and Itabus)

A budget option for other cities. On the rail corridors the train is usually faster and more central, so most people take it, but the coach can win on price or for routes the train serves awkwardly. Check routes and fares on FlixBus ›

A note on driving

Pisa's historic centre has a ZTL (limited-traffic zone) and tight parking, so a car is a burden in the core. It earns its keep mainly for reaching the coast, the Pisan hills, and the wider Tuscan countryside.
