Getting around

Ravenna — Getting around

Ravenna is flat, compact, and made for bikes and walking. The station sits a couple of hundred metres from the historic centre, and cycling is the local way to get around. The catch: Ravenna is on a regional line, not the high-speed network, so the fastest trains to distant cities route through Bologna, about an hour and a quarter away.

Getting there

By air

Ravenna has no airport of its own. The nearest are Bologna Marconi (BLQ), a full international airport about an hour and a quarter away by train, and Rimini’s Federico Fellini airport, about an hour down the coast. For long-haul you’ll route through Bologna or a European hub.

By train

Ravenna's station is a short walk from the centre and sits on the regional Adriatic line. Rimini is about an hour south, Ferrara about an hour north, and Bologna, the gateway to the high-speed network, about an hour and a quarter away (times below).

Around the city

On foot and by bike

Ravenna is flat as a table and compact, and cycling is woven into daily life more than almost anywhere: bike lanes everywhere, easy distances, and the mosaics all within an easy ride. Most daily life happens on two wheels or on foot.

Buses (Start Romagna)

The local network is run by Start Romagna; there’s no metro or tram, but the flat, compact city doesn’t need one. A single ride is €2.00 (Start Romagna, 2026).

Intercity buses (FlixBus and Itabus)

A budget option for reaching bigger cities and the coast. On the regional corridor the train is usually simpler, but the coach can win on price or for direct routes the train serves awkwardly. Check routes and fares on FlixBus ›

A note on driving

Ravenna's historic centre has a ZTL (limited-traffic zone) and the usual central parking limits, so a car is a burden in the core. It earns its keep mainly for reaching the Adriatic beaches, the pine forests, and the wider Romagna countryside and coast.
