Reggio Emilia — Getting around

Reggio Emilia punches above its size for getting around Italy. It has its own high-speed station, the striking Calatrava-designed Mediopadana, the only stop between Milan and Bologna on the fast line. The compact centre is flat and walkable, buses cover the rest, and both Milan and Bologna are well under an hour away.

Getting there

By air

Reggio Emilia has no airport of its own. The nearest is Bologna Marconi (BLQ), a full international airport about 50 minutes away by train; Milan’s airports are also within reach to the northwest. For long-haul you’ll route through Bologna, Milan, or a European hub.

By high-speed train — the Mediopadana

Reggio’s high-speed station, AV Mediopadana, is the only fast-line stop between Milan and Bologna. Bologna is about 20 minutes away, Milan about 35. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, it sits about 4 km north of the centre, linked in by bus.

By regional train

The central station in town sits on the regional Milan–Bologna line, with frequent, cheaper trains to the neighbouring Emilian cities. Parma and Modena are each about 15 minutes away (times below).

Around the city

On foot and by bike

The historic centre is small, flat, and easily walkable, and, like much of Emilia, cycling is woven into daily life, with bike lanes and easy distances. Most central daily life happens on foot or two wheels.

Buses (SETA)

Reggio’s local network is run by SETA; there’s no metro or tram, but the compact city doesn’t need one. A single ride is €2.00, valid for the standard urban window (SETA, 2026).

Intercity buses (FlixBus and Itabus)

A budget option for other cities. On Reggio’s rail corridor the train is usually faster and more central, so most people take it, but the coach can win on price or for routes the train serves awkwardly. Check routes and fares on FlixBus ›

A note on driving

Reggio's historic centre has a ZTL (limited-traffic zone) and the usual central parking squeeze, so a car is a burden in the core. It earns its keep mainly for trips into the Emilian countryside, the Apennines, or the food-producing towns nearby.
