Cost & housing

Reggio Emilia is one of the best-value cities in a wealthy region: a prosperous, liveable Emilian city where both rent and buying stay affordable, kept sensible by its size and its quiet, working confidence rather than any lack of quality.
Renting
These are for a decent, functional apartment with a real kitchen and a lift. Cheaper exists if you compromise on condition or location.

Buying
If you’re looking to purchase:
Prices are rising gently off a low base. Reggio remains one of the more affordable cities to buy in the prosperous Emilia belt, well below Parma, Modena, or Bologna nearby.

Other monthly costs
Utilities are a national market in Italy, so that range holds roughly anywhere. Reggio’s Po-plain winters are cold and damp and its summers hot, so heating and cooling both do some work across the year.

Our take
Reggio Emilia is the quiet-value pick of the Emilia belt. It has everything its famous neighbours have, the food, the wealth, the high quality of life, a fast train to Milan and Bologna, but without their prices or their crowds. If you’re renting, few prosperous cities go this easy on the budget. If you’re buying, you’re getting into one of the more affordable corners of a rich region, with room still to rise.
One thing no property listing mentions: Reggio runs one of the most admired early-childhood education systems in the world. The ‘Reggio Emilia approach’ to preschooling is studied and copied globally, and the city’s municipal schools are a genuine draw, a real, concrete reason to look here if you’re moving with young children.
