Cost & housing

Rome’s the biggest housing variable in this guide. The same flat can cost double from one district to the next, so a single average doesn’t tell you much. What you pay comes down to where you land. The range is below, and so is where to check live prices yourself.
Renting
These are for a decent, functional apartment with a real kitchen and a lift. Cheaper exists if you compromise on condition or location. Central rents have been climbing, and the desirable core now sits near the top of the Italian market, second only to Milan.
Buying
Up about 6% on the year, and still climbing. The historic centre runs more than double the citywide average. In Rome, location is nearly the whole price.
Other monthly costs
Utilities are a national market in Italy, so that range holds roughly anywhere.
Our take
Rome rewards people who get the neighbourhood right. The same one-bed can cost nearly double from one district to the next, so where you land matters more than how you live. Get it right and Rome’s more affordable than its name suggests. Get it wrong and you’ll pay centre money to live at the edge of the centre’s noise.
And almost nobody mentions this. Since February 2026, if you live in Rome or the wider metro area, the city’s museums are free. You just show your ID at the door. The Capitoline Museums, the Ara Pacis, Trajan’s Markets, even the Trevi Fountain, which now charges tourists to get near it. Every guidebook still says to buy the museum card. For a resident, it’s all yours for the price of carrying your wallet.
