Getting around

Sanremo is a small coastal town that leans on France as much as Italy for getting in and out. The main international airport is Nice, just across the border; the town itself is walkable and flat along the seafront, with a famous cycle-and-walk path on the old railway line; and the coastal train links you east into Italy and west into France.
Getting there
By air — Nice Côte d'Azur (France)
The nearest major international airport is Nice, about 57 km west across the French border, a full international hub with wide European and long-haul routes, roughly 35 minutes by car or reachable by coach and train. Genoa’s smaller airport is the nearest Italian one, about 137 km east.
From the airport into town
From Nice, a direct coach or the train down the coast brings you into Sanremo; Riviera Trasporti runs cross-border coach services along the Riviera.
By train
Sanremo's station sits on the Ligurian coastal line, linking west to the French border at Ventimiglia and on toward Nice and Monaco, and east along the coast toward Genoa (times below).
Around the city
On foot and by bike — the Pista Ciclabile
The seafront town is flat and walkable, and its standout feature is the Pista Ciclabile, a cycling-and-walking path laid along the old coastal railway line, a car-free way to move along the shore for miles in either direction. Much of daily life happens on foot or two wheels here.
Buses (Riviera Trasporti)
The local and coastal buses are run by Riviera Trasporti (RT). A single ride is €1.50, valid 100 minutes (RT, 2026).
Intercity buses (FlixBus and Itabus)
A budget option for reaching bigger cities and the airports. Along the coast the train is usually simpler, but the coach can win on price or for direct airport runs. Check routes and fares on FlixBus ›
A note on driving
A car is handy on the Riviera for reaching the hill villages and the coast beyond the train line, but Sanremo's centre has the usual coastal-town parking squeeze and a ZTL, so it's more useful for getting out of town than around it.
