Getting around

Spoleto solves its own steep hill in a clever way: a free network of escalators and moving walkways carries you from the car parks below straight up into the old town. Add a station on the main Rome line, Rome is under an hour and a half, and it’s an easy town to live in and reach, though a car helps for the wider Umbrian countryside.
Getting there
By air
Spoleto has no airport of its own. The nearest is Perugia’s small San Francesco d’Assisi airport, about 40 minutes away, with a handful of European routes; Rome’s airports are the bigger gateway, reachable by direct train. For long-haul you’ll route through Rome or a European hub.
By train
Spoleto's station sits on the main Rome–Ancona line, so Rome is about an hour and twenty minutes away, Perugia around an hour, and the Umbrian towns are close (times below).
Around the city
On foot and the mechanized routes
The old town is a steep hilltop, but Spoleto's signature is its percorsi meccanizzati: a free network of escalators and moving walkways, much of it underground, that lifts you from the car parks and lower town straight up to Piazza della Libertà, the Rocca, and the Duomo. Between those and your feet, the historic centre is easy to move around despite the hill.
Buses (Busitalia)
Spoleto’s local buses are run by Busitalia (Umbria), connecting the station, the lower town, and the outer areas. A single ride is €1.30, valid 90 minutes (Busitalia, 2026).
Intercity buses (FlixBus and Itabus)
A budget option for other cities, on FlixBus and Itabus. On the Rome line the train is usually faster and more central, so most people take it, but the coach can win on price or for routes the train serves awkwardly.
A note on driving
Inside the walls Spoleto is steep and restricted, with parking in the lots below (linked up by the escalators), so a car is a burden in the core. It earns its keep for the wider Valnerina, the Umbrian hills, and the neighbouring towns, which reward having your own wheels.
