Getting around

Urbino — Getting around

Urbino keeps its Renaissance perfection partly by being hard to reach: it has no railway station of its own. You get here by bus from Pesaro on the coast, where the main Adriatic line runs, or by direct coach from Rome, and once you’re up on the hill, the walled town is a compact, steep, walkable world. For the surrounding Marche, though, you'll be glad of a car.

Getting there

By air

Urbino has no airport near. The closest is Ancona’s Marche Airport, then Rimini and Bologna, each reached by train to Pesaro and a bus up. For long-haul you’ll route through Bologna, Rome, or a European hub, and finish by car or bus.

By bus from Pesaro — the usual way in

The nearest railway station is Pesaro, on the main Adriatic line, about 40–50 minutes away; from there the Adriabus “Linea Verde” coach climbs to Urbino. There’s also a direct Adriabus coach from Rome. This is how most people arrive without a car.

By car — the practical choice for the region

For Urbino and the Montefeltro hills around it, a car is the realistic option, with parking in lots below the walls. It's what opens up the wider Marche countryside, though for the town itself, you won't need it once you're up.

Around the city

On foot

Urbino's walled centre is small, steep, and made entirely for walking, a compact climb of Renaissance streets rising to the Palazzo Ducale and the university, with the town's whole life within a few minutes on foot (good shoes for the hills). This is a walking town.

Buses (Adriabus)

Urbino’s local and regional buses are run by Adriabus, connecting the centre, the car parks below, the university buildings, and the surrounding towns. A single ride is about €2.00, valid 60 minutes (Adriabus, 2026).

Intercity buses (FlixBus and Adriabus coaches)

For reaching other cities, coaches, including the direct Rome service, are central to how Urbino connects, since there’s no train. They can be the simplest way out, on FlixBus and Adriabus.

A note on driving

The walled centre is steep and largely car-free with a ZTL, and parking is in the lots below (linked up by lifts and a short climb), so a car is a burden in the core. But out of town it earns its keep: the Montefeltro hills, the coast at Pesaro, and the countryside all reward having your own wheels.
