Where to live

Verona — Where to live

Verona curls inside a bend of the river Adige, and that’s the key to reading it: the historic centre fills the loop, the lived-in neighborhoods spread across the water, and the villa-dotted hills rise behind. Inside the loop, across the water, up the hills: three prices, three lives.

Inside the river bend: the historic centre

Centro Storico

most expensive

The old city inside the Adige loop: the Roman Arena, Piazza delle Erbe, cobbled streets, and centuries of architecture layered together. It's beautiful, walkable, and full of life, with the best shops and dining at the door. The trade is cost and buzz: it's the priciest place to live and it fills with visitors, especially around the summer opera season.

Best for: those who want to live inside the beauty and don't mind the crowds and the price

Learn more about the historic heart

Verona’s centre has been the heart of the city for two thousand years. Its great Roman amphitheatre, the Arena, was built in the first century AD to hold gladiator games; today it’s the largest open-air opera house in the world, and on summer nights the whole city gathers there. A few streets away, Piazza delle Erbe still sits on the old Roman forum, the marketplace it has been since antiquity.

In the Middle Ages the della Scala family, the Scaligeri, ruled Verona and made it one of the great powers of northern Italy, leaving the fortified bridges and tombs that still mark the old town, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And then there’s the legend: a medieval house here, once the Cappelletti family’s, carries the balcony the world knows as Juliet’s, after the star-crossed lovers Shakespeare set in Verona. Roman, medieval, and literary all at once, few small cities carry so much.

San Zeno

mid to premium

A characterful quarter just west of the core, built around the beautiful Romanesque Basilica of San Zeno. It's authentic and homely, markets, neighbourhood restaurants, and a real sense of community, while still an easy walk into the centre. The trade is that its charm and closeness keep prices firm.

Best for: those wanting character and community a short walk from the centre

Across the Adige

Borgo Trento

premium

Just across the river north of the centre, Borgo Trento is Verona's refined, leafy residential address: handsome early-1900s buildings, riverside calm, and the main hospital nearby. It's quiet and prestigious, favoured by families and professionals who want peace without leaving the city. The trade is cost: it's one of the dearer places to live.

Best for: families and professionals wanting calm, green, and close-in

Veronetta

mid, bohemian

Across the river on the left bank, Veronetta is the university quarter: artistic, multicultural, and lively, with cheap eats, creative spaces, and a young crowd. It's the most affordable area close to the centre and full of energy. It's busier and rougher-edged than the polished centre across the water.

Best for: students, young professionals, and anyone wanting energy and value near the core

The hills

Torricelle & Valdonega

premium, quiet

The green hills rising behind the city, dotted with Art Nouveau villas and gardens and offering panoramic views over the rooftops. Private, calm, and exclusive, a retreat above the noise. The trade is practical: you're above and outside the centre, so it suits those happy with a car or a climb.

Best for: those wanting privacy, views, and space above the city
