Getting around

Viareggio is a flat seaside town made for walking and cycling, with its long seafront promenade at the heart of daily life. Pisa’s airport is about half an hour away by train, and the coastal line links you along the Versilia shore and inland to Lucca and Florence. It’s an easy, car-light place to live by the sea.
Getting there
By air — Pisa (Galileo Galilei)
The nearest airport is Pisa’s Galileo Galilei (PSA), Tuscany’s main international gateway, about 30 minutes away by train down the coast, wide European coverage and some long-haul. Florence’s airport is another option a bit farther.
By train
Viareggio's station is central, in Piazza Dante, on the Genoa–Pisa–Rome coastal line, served by regional and faster trains. Pisa and Lucca are both close, the Cinque Terre are within reach up the coast, and Florence is about an hour and a half (times below).
Around the city
On foot and by bike — the Passeggiata
Viareggio is flat as the sea it faces, and life runs along its famous seafront promenade, the Passeggiata, lined with Liberty-style cafés and shops. Walking and cycling are the natural way to get around, and the town is small enough that most daily life happens on foot or two wheels.
Buses (Autolinee Toscane)
The local and coastal buses are run by Autolinee Toscane, Tuscany’s region-wide operator. A single ride is €2.00, valid 90 minutes (Autolinee Toscane, 2026).
Intercity buses (FlixBus and Itabus)
A budget option for other cities. On the coastal line the train is usually faster and more central, so most people take it, but the coach can win on price or for routes the train serves awkwardly. Check routes and fares on FlixBus ›
A note on driving
A car is useful on the Versilia coast for reaching the beaches, the marble towns of the Apuan Alps, and the hills inland, but Viareggio's centre has a ZTL and parking gets tight in summer and during Carnival, so it's more useful for getting out of town than around it.
