No harbor, no ferry, no crowds spilling off a beach. Just a compact hill village of narrow lanes and a single long main street, surrounded on three sides by the terraces that make the best wine on the coast. You feel the farming past here more than anywhere.
The Lardarina, the long brick staircase of nearly 400 steps (33 flights) that climbs from the station to the village. Walk it once for the story; take the little shuttle bus the other times.
Because it sits high and dry, Corniglia is the wine village. The prized Sciacchetrà, a sweet amber wine pressed from grapes dried on racks for months, has its heartland in these terraces. Ask for a small glass after dinner.
