The biggest of the five and the only one with a real sandy beach, the resort of the group, split between a medieval old town and the newer Fegina seafront.

Two halves joined by a short tunnel: the tangled old town around the church of San Giovanni Battista, and Fegina, the beach strip where the giant carved-stone Neptune, Il Gigante, holds up a terrace above the sand. The most hotels, the most room to breathe, the easiest arrival.
The beach itself (rare here), the Gigante statue, and the anchovy. Monterosso’s salted anchovies are a protected local specialty worth ordering.
The poet Eugenio Montale summered here as a boy and won the Nobel in 1975. His Ossi di seppia is soaked in this coast: the lemons, the terraces, the glare off the sea.
