A steep single spine of a town, pastel houses stacked up the gorge, with a tiny marina where boats are hauled up the slipway into the streets. Busy at the pinch points, but climb a few lanes and it empties out fast.
The harbor view from the breakwater, the boats parked in the streets, and the terraced climb to the church of San Giovanni Battista.
The macchiaioli painter Telemaco Signorini put Riomaggiore on the map in the 1890s, painting its stacked houses long before it was famous, and helped give a whole strain of Ligurian landscape painting its name.
