Everything funnels to the harbor square and its ring of restaurants. Above it, the round Doria tower and the ruined castle that once watched for pirates; on the point, the Santa Margherita church stands with its feet almost in the sea.
Climb the Doria castle tower for a few euros, and walk up toward the Corniglia trail for the photograph everyone knows, the harbor from above.
Vernazza took the worst of the 2011 flood: on 25 October a wall of mud and debris buried the main street meters deep. The town dug itself out and rebuilt; the small height-marks are easy to miss unless you know to look.
