Emilia-Romagna is the part of Italy that Italians themselves dream about, and then quietly keep for themselves. It is the land of the things the whole world thinks it knows: real Parmigiano, true balsamic, prosciutto di Parma, the ragu that Bologna gave its name to. A broad, flat, fertile plain, the Pianura Padana, sits at the heart of the region, framed by the Apennine mountains to the south and west and the Adriatic Sea to the east. The land is rich farming country, the source of the region’s famous food. The coast around Rimini is a long ribbon of beach resorts, while the hills hide medieval towns, castles, and spa villages.

Emilia-Romagna has a humid continental climate, more extreme than coastal Italy. Summers, June through August, are hot and humid, often reaching about 33°C (91°F). Winters are cold and gray, with fog common across the plain and occasional snow. Spring and autumn are mild but can be damp. The Adriatic coast near Rimini is slightly milder and sunnier.
Affordability
Costs sit below Tuscany and well below Milan, though Bologna is the priciest spot in the region. Smaller cities like Parma, Modena, and Reggio Emilia offer lower rents and a high standard of living for the money. The coast and the rural Apennine areas are cheaper still. Overall, the region delivers strong value for its wealth and quality of life.
