All connections
Getting around Lake Como is a mix of charm and practicality. The town centers are walkable, the famous ferries connect the shores, and trains link the main towns to Milan. But here is the truth most guides skip: to actually live on the lake, a car is essential. The ferries and trains are wonderful, but daily life off their timetables, the inland villages, the real grocery runs, the freedom to come and go, needs your own wheels.
Around the lake
A car is essential
This is the reality of lake living. The town centers are walkable and the ferries are a real way to get about, but the lakeside roads, villages, shops, and schools are spread out and not all served by ferry or train. To live here comfortably rather than just visit, you will want a car, even though the roads are narrow, winding, and slow, and parking in the villages is tight.
The lake ferries
The much-loved heart of lake transport, run by Navigazione Laghi. Ferries and faster hydrofoils connect the main towns, and the central ‘golden triangle’ of Bellagio, Menaggio, and Varenna is linked by frequent car and passenger ferries. Beautiful, practical for crossing the lake, but tied to a timetable that thins in the winter months.
On foot in the towns
Each town center, Como, Bellagio, Varenna, is compact and walkable, often steep and cobbled. Lovely for daily errands within a town, less so for anything spread out or uphill with shopping.
Trains
Como, Lecco, and Varenna sit on rail lines to Milan, which makes those towns the most practical for car-free commuting. The smaller western-shore villages have no train and rely on ferries, buses, and cars. Lines are run by Trenord and Trenitalia.
Intercity buses (FlixBus and Itabus)
For travel beyond the lake, intercity coaches like FlixBus and Itabus run from Como town and nearby Milan, a budget alternative to the train. In practice the train to Milan and onward is usually the easier path from the lake, and the bus mainly helps on a tight budget or for specific longer routes.
Train connections
From the towns with stations, Como, Lecco, and Varenna, Milan and beyond are within easy reach. Rough times:
Milan (from Como)
about 40 min
Milan (from Varenna)
about 1h
Milan (from Lecco)
about 50 min
Lugano (from Como)
about 40 min
Getting to a plane
Lake Como is well placed for airports despite feeling remote. Milan’s airports are the gateway: Malpensa is about an hour by car and the big intercontinental hub including direct US flights, Linate is the close-in city airport, and Bergamo serves budget carriers about an hour away. Como town also sits about 40 minutes from Lugano in Switzerland.
