Lazio

Most people come to Lazio without ever knowing they are there. They come for Rome, and Rome is so vast a thing that it swallows the name of the region around it.
Region Profile
Landscape
Remarkably varied. Volcanic lakes and the Tiber valley, the Alban and Sabine hills, Etruscan tablelands in the north, and a long Tyrrhenian coast running to sandy beaches and the Pontine islands. Green and open once you leave the city.
General Vibe
One world city ringed by quiet countryside. Rome is loud, ancient, and all-consuming. The rest of Lazio is rural, traditional, and largely untouristed, a region of wine towns, lakes, and medieval centers that live at their own slow pace.
Weather
Mediterranean and mild. Hot, dry summers tempered near the coast and lakes, cool damp winters, and long warm shoulder seasons. The inland hills run cooler than the city, which is exactly why Romans flee to them in August.
Affordability
Rome is a major capital and priced like one, though gentler than Milan. Step outside the city, into the Castelli Romani, the lakes, or the Tuscia, and both rents and property fall sharply, with quiet towns offering better value an hour from the center.
