Lombardy

Region hero image

Lombardy is the engine room of Italy, the region that pays the bills and sets the pace. This is where the money is made, in Milan's banks and design houses and fashion ateliers, in the factories of Bergamo and Brescia, in a quarter of the entire country's wealth. But to think of Lombardy as only work and industry is to miss half of it. The same region holds the most beautiful lakes in Italy, Como, Garda, Maggiore, and the Alps rising behind them. It is Italy at its most modern and its most glamorous, often in the same view.

Region Profile

Landscape

A region of dramatic variety, running north to south. The high Alps line the Swiss border, giving way to a belt of world-famous lakes, Como, Garda, Maggiore, ringed by mountains and villas. Below them lie gentle foothills and then the flat, fertile, industrial plain of the Po valley, where Milan and most of the cities sit.

General Vibe

Fast, modern, international, and ambitious. Lombardy moves at a quicker, more businesslike pace than the rest of Italy, especially in Milan, with a strong work ethic and a cosmopolitan, outward-looking culture. It feels efficient and global rather than sleepy and traditional, though the lake towns and smaller cities keep a gentler, more classic Italian rhythm.

Weather

Lombardy has a continental climate, with real seasonal extremes. Winters, December through February, are cold, gray, and foggy on the plain, often near freezing. Summers, June through August, are hot and humid, frequently around 30°C (86°F) or above. Spring and autumn are mild but can be rainy. The lakes enjoy a milder microclimate, and the Alps are cold and snowy in winter.

Affordability

Lombardy is the most expensive region in Italy. Milan leads the country on rent and property by a wide margin, and the prestige lake towns like Como command premium prices. Costs ease in the smaller cities such as Bergamo, Brescia, and Pavia, and in the plain to the south, but overall this is the priciest part of the country to live.
