Marche

Marche is the part of Italy that even Italians forget to mention, and the people who live there would quite like to keep it that way.
Region Profile
Landscape
Remarkable range in a small region. A long sandy Adriatic coast rising quickly into the rolling green colline marchigiane, much like Tuscany, then climbing west into the dramatic Sibillini mountains of the Apennines, with peaks over 2,400 meters. Sea and mountains within two hours.
General Vibe
Quiet, authentic, and proudly under the radar. Tidy, well-run towns with strong civic pride, a warm welcome, and a slow pace. Culturally richer than its size suggests, with opera festivals, jousting tournaments, and a deep artistic heritage, but without the crowds or the polish of the famous regions.
Weather
Temperate and varied. Warm dry summers tempered by sea breezes on the coast, colder winters inland and in the mountains, where snow falls in the Sibillini. Long mild springs and autumns. The coast is gentler year-round; inland feels the seasons more sharply.
Affordability
One of the best-value regions in central Italy, often around twenty percent below Tuscany for comparable property. Inland hill towns are very cheap to buy, the coast near Ancona costs more, and many bargain stone houses need renovation. Daily life is affordable throughout.
