Neighborhoods

Catania divides along a simple axis: the loud, beautiful old centre where the life is, the calmer bourgeois streets to the north where families settle, the university quarters full of students, and the seafront and outskirts for space and air. Four ways to live in one city, and they share very little.
The historic core
The old centre, the loud and beautiful heart of Catania, built of black lava stone. Walkable, lively, and intense, where the markets, the street food, and the city's real theatre play out, alongside its rough edges.
Centro Storico
Most authentic · lower centralThe baroque heart, loud and alive.
The dense Baroque heart of the city, built of black lava stone around Piazza del Duomo, the roaring fish market known as A Piscarìa, and the long shopping spine of Via Etnea. This is the Catania people come for: you walk everywhere, eat everywhere, and live inside the noise and theatre of the old town. It is loud, beautiful, lively, and the cheapest central place to live, with noise, traffic, and volcanic grit thrown in.
Best for: Those who want the most authentic, vivid Catania and can take the intensity and grit.
Learn more about the historic heart
Catania is a Baroque city because of a catastrophe. In 1693 a huge earthquake levelled the whole of eastern Sicily and destroyed Catania almost entirely; over the decades that followed it was rebuilt from scratch in the theatrical late Baroque of the age, using the one material Etna supplies without end, black volcanic stone. The architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini gave the new city its wide, straight streets and its grand set-pieces, chief among them Piazza del Duomo and its lava-and-marble elephant fountain, the Liotru, the city’s own emblem.
At the centre stands the Duomo, dedicated to Sant’Agata, Catania’s patron saint, whose February festival pulls hundreds of thousands into the streets and ranks among the largest religious feasts anywhere. Just behind the cathedral, in the arches around the Amenano fountain, the old fish market known as A Piscarìa still runs at full volume every morning, as the city’s markets have for centuries, the loudest and most authentic daily theatre in the old town.
The elegant north
North of the old centre, the polished, bourgeois Catania of wider streets and quieter days, where most families and professionals settle.
Corso Italia, Bellini & upper Via Etnea
Most elegantPolished, bourgeois, and calm.
Up the top of Via Etnea and out along Corso Italia toward the Bellini quarter, Catania turns polished and bourgeois. This is the settled, comfortable side of the city: handsome late-19th and 20th-century apartment blocks, good shops and cafés, leafier streets, and the safest, calmest feel in Catania. Rents run higher here by local standards, though still modest next to the Italian mainland.
Best for: Professionals and families who want calm, comfort, and the city's most settled streets.
The university quarters
The streets around the university, taking their energy from the students who fill them.
Around the university
Lively · studentYoung, energetic, and good value.
Around the university and its faculties, the streets fill with students and the quarter takes its energy from them: cheap eats, bars, bookshops, and a nightlife that runs late. It is central, lively, and among the better-value places to rent, with the fast turnover and noise that a student district brings.
Best for: Students, academics, and anyone who wants energy, nightlife, and value near the centre.
The seafront & outskirts
Out from the centre, the Catania of harbours, black-rock swimming spots, and residential calm, where you trade density for space and air.
Ognina, Picanello & the coast
Residential · seasideSpace, air, and the sea.
North and out from the centre, the city loosens into residential districts and the coast: Ognina with its little harbour and black-rock swimming spots, Picanello and the everyday residential belt, and the seafront beyond. Here you trade the density of the old town for space, air, and calmer family life, with the sea as part of the daily routine, at the cost of distance from the centre.
Best for: Families and sea lovers who want space, calm, and air over a central address.
In Catania the neighborhood sets the tone: the old centre for life and noise, the north for calm, the university streets for energy, the coast for air. Treat this as a starting map, and check current listings on Immobiliare ›
