Overview

Catania is the city that does the work while Sicily's prettier towns pose for the cameras.

This is the island's second city and its true engine, a gritty, energetic port of black lava stone sprawled at the foot of Mount Etna, the volcano the locals simply call A Muntagna, the Mountain. Built and rebuilt from the dark stone the volcano keeps providing, Catania is a working university city, loud, chaotic, and alive, with a big student population, a growing tech scene the locals call the Etna Valley, and a Baroque center that earned its UNESCO listing. It is the least postcard-pretty of Sicily's big names and somehow the most real, a place that gets on with living rather than performing.

A note on these scores: Catania is a city of contrasts, lively and gritty at once, and the experience varies by neighborhood. We score Catania as daily life is really lived in its central and residential areas, not by its roughest corners. Safety especially depends on where you are, and the neighborhood guide shows the real range.
