Getting around

Montalcino — Getting around

You will want a car. This is a small walled town on a hilltop in the Val d’Orcia, with no train station of its own and only a handful of buses a day down to Siena and the valley. Inside the walls you get around perfectly on foot, it’s tiny, but for the vineyards, the neighbouring towns, and daily life beyond the gates, a car isn’t a convenience here, it’s the plan.

Getting there

By air

No airport near, and none close. Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci is about an hour and a half to two hours away by road; Rome and Pisa are farther. However you fly in, you’ll drive the last stretch, or connect by train and bus to Siena and on.

By car — the realistic way

For most people, reaching and living in Montalcino means driving. It sits off the main roads in the Val d'Orcia, about 40 minutes from Siena through beautiful wine country, with parking in lots outside the walls. That's just how it works here.

By bus

If you don’t drive, Autolinee Toscane runs buses between Siena and Montalcino (around an hour), and the nearest train station is down in the valley at Buonconvento, itself reached by bus. It’s doable car-free, but it takes patience and planning, and it won’t reach the vineyards.

Around the city

On foot, inside the walls

The town itself is tiny and made for walking, the whole walled centre crosses in ten minutes on foot, climbing to the fortress at the top. For life inside Montalcino, you need nothing but your feet.

By car, for everything else

Beyond the walls, the car takes over: the wineries and cellars, the Val d'Orcia villages, Siena, the shops and services of the larger towns. In a place this rural, a car is simply how daily life works. This is the one unavoidable cost of the dream.

Buses (Autolinee Toscane)

The buses that do run connect Montalcino to Siena and the valley for those without a car. A single ride is €2.00 (Autolinee Toscane, 2026), but service is sparse and built around school and commuter times, not convenience.
