Montalcino city skyline

Overview

Montalcino is a small stone town on a high hill, known the world over for one thing: Brunello.

It sits in the Val d'Orcia south of Siena, a medieval village of about 5,000 people wrapped in walls and crowned by a 14th-century fortress. Below it spread the vineyards that made its name, the Sangiovese hills that produce Brunello di Montalcino, the first wine in Italy to earn the country's top DOCG status and still one of its most prestigious reds. The town itself is tiny and beautiful: narrow lanes, stone houses, sweeping views over a UNESCO-protected landscape of olive groves, cypress, and rolling fields. Life here moves with the seasons and the harvest, slow and rooted, with the wine at the center of nearly everything.
