Ancona

Overview
Ancona doesn't try to charm you, and it doesn't need to.
The capital of Marche is a working Adriatic port, a real city of about a hundred thousand built onto a rocky elbow of coast, where ferries leave for Croatia and Greece and the business of daily life carries on without much concern for tourists. It is the practical heart of a quiet region: the main hospitals, the university, the airport, the train line, and the port all gather here. It is less postcard-pretty than the hill towns inland, a little rough at the edges in the way of port cities, and it offers something they cannot, a genuine, functioning city by the sea where ordinary life actually works.
