Tropea

Overview
Some places have to earn your attention. Tropea just stops you where you stand. It hangs off a cliff on Calabria's Tyrrhenian coast, a tangle of honey-colored stone and narrow lanes ending at a balustrade, and below it the sea goes a blue you won't quite believe until you're looking at it. Out on its own rock sits the Santa Maria dell'Isola, a little sanctuary that's been the town's postcard for centuries, and on a clear evening you can catch Stromboli smoking on the horizon. This is the deep south, sun-baked and unhurried, a town that has been beautiful for a very long time and never felt the need to prove it.
Tropea’s red onions aren’t a gimmick, they’re a protected regional treasure (IGP). Sweet enough to eat almost like fruit, they turn up in everything from salads to marmalade to gelato, and they’ve been grown on these coastal terraces for centuries. Ask for ‘cipolla rossa di Tropea’ and you’ll get a local’s nod.
